RESTYLANE is a Swedish innovation dedicated to natural beauty. After decades of extensive research, Dr Bengt ?erup and the company Q-Med in Uppsala, Sweden, succeeded in developing a method to stabilize non-animal, hyaluronic acid and forming a gel called NASHA. The first application of the NASHA gel, RESTYLANE, was introduced in 1996.

Smoothing wrinkles

Smoothing out folds and wrinkles by adding volume can make an enormous difference to a patient's appearance and sometimes make them look several years younger. With RESTYLANE, you can offer facial rejuvenation without the use of foreign elements.

For the treatment of wrinkles or folds, RESTYLANE is injected into the skin in small amounts with a very fine needle. The injected gel gives natural volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. The results can be seen immediately. How a wrinkle occurs

As we age, the hyaluronic acid in the skin diminishes as cells lose their ability to produce it. As a result, the skin becomes drier, thinner and less able to restore itself after squeezing or indentation. The loss of skin fullness also means that the skin becomes looser. All in all, these factors lead to wrinkling and an older appearance of the skin.

Sculpting lips

For many women, a fuller, more sensual mouth comes high on their wish list. With RESTYLANE, you can offer a more pronounced mouth or a soft pouting look using the body's own material.

Lip augmentation is usually carried out in two steps - pouting and contouring. To create a more pronounced mouth and fuller lips, RESTYLANE is injected into the upper and/or lower lip. This is often combined with the marking of the vermilion border by injecting the gel along the lip line. Redefining this edge leads to a more youthful and appealing look. The philtrum ridges can be defined by injecting the gel into the lines. To achieve the optimal result, a combination of these steps is often used.

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that is identical in all species and tissue types. It plays an important role in giving volume to the skin, shape to the eyes and elasticity to the joints. The use of hyaluronic acid is well documented in areas such as eye surgery and orthopaedics. In the last two decades more than 30 million people have been treated with hyaluronic acid-based products. All products in the RESTYLANE product range are based on the same stabilized hyaluronic acid gel, called NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid), which is produced by Q-Med, Sweden. The unique patented stabilization process provides RESTYLANE with a duration of effect for up to one year. By comparison, non-stabilized hyaluronic acid lasts only days to weeks at most.

Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid exists naturally in all living organisms and is a universal component of the spaces between the cells of body tissues (extracellular space). It is a polysaccharide that has an identical chemical structure, no matter whether it is found in simple bacteria or in human beings.

Hyaluronic acid was first used commercially in 1942 when Endre Balazs applied for a patent to use it as a substitue for egg white in bakery products. He went on to become the leading expert on hyaluronic acid and made the majority of discoveries relating to hyaluronic acid over the next fifty years.

In the last two decades, the therapeutic and aesthetic uses of hyaluronic acid have been extended to a number of areas, including the treatment of joint pain, use in fertility clinics and tissue augmentation. In the past few years, biotechnology has been used to develop hyaluronic acid derivatives with tailor-made molecular sizes, which will further increase the potential applications of this remarkable molecule.
